- 1862, from Fr. nocturne, noun use of O.Fr. nocturne "nocturnal," from L. nocturnus (see nocturnal). Coined c.1814 by John Field, who wrote many of them, in a style that Chopin mastered in his own works, which popularized the term. Nocturn, a 12c. borrowing from M.L. nocturna, meant "group of Psalms used in the nocturns," a division of the office of matins. ...Английский Этимологический словарь
